Whilst in Panama one has to visit the Panama canal.
It really is the most amazing piece of engineering.
Some facts about the Panama canal
The 82 Km long Panamá Canal is not a leveled trench from one side to another. To go through the Canal a ship must first climb up to the Gatun Lake, the heart of the Canal, 26 meters above sea level. In order to do this the ship has to go through a series of steps, called Locks. It is a stairway that uses water and gravity to lift the ship one step at a time.
